Topic: CSY Course - Neverputt

The CSY Course for Neverputt is about to hit the completion interval! All that is missing is the opinions of others players. Other than that, the course is complete, with 18 holes that could knock your socks off.

This course is no longer available separately. Check [http://www.nevercorner.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=1343]this topic[/url] out for the latest version.

Re: CSY Course - Neverputt

Due to a change in texture that one of the holes of this course uses, it has been updated to 1.00.RC2 to correctly reflect that new texture. Still looking for opinions if it needs to be improved or not.

Again, this course will not work with 1.4.0

Re: CSY Course - Neverputt

Minor caulk bugs has caused this course to update itself. Also changed one of the existing holes of the course to be more variant. The new version is 1.00.RC3.

Again, this course will not work with 1.4.0

Re: CSY Course - Neverputt

1.00.RC6.

Added - Some "posts" to help lead newcomers in the right direction.
Changed - Used the clean up textures as done by Elviz.

Re: CSY Course - Neverputt

CSY-

I have the most recent release, and I was wondering if that was the 1.4.0 version you were saying wouldn't work. If thats the case how do I run your maps?

EDIT- Scratch that. I got it inputted into the windows dev version of neverball from ???? (I wish I rememebred his name but I think you know who I mean). Anyways, I got it working but I am missing texture images for hole 3 despite the fact that I moved all the files over to the mtrl folder (the back ground and grass are white, but everything else has color).

I am assuming I screwed up so I'll reinstall the files, but if you know something i don't Id appreciate it if you let me know.

Thanks for the variety-

Re: CSY Course - Neverputt

The white-ness was intentional on hole 3. I did this to make it look like there is some snow on that particular hole.

Re: CSY Course - Neverputt

Thanks, I was a little confused when I saw that I had all the right textures in mtrl

Re: CSY Course - Neverputt

1.00.RC7 fixes Hole 15. Sometimes you could trigger a glitch on the mover.

Re: CSY Course - Neverputt

This course happens to be the first one I've looked as a candidate for inclusion with the "official" distribution.  But before that it would be great to see this stuff addressed:

  * Barriers (walls that keep the ball from falling out) could really use more attention.  Have a look at the included courses for some good examples.  In fact, I think it would be best if you used the same kind of barriers (width, height, etc) that are used in those courses.
  * Strange initial camera positions in many maps.  They are often too low and provide too little information about the map, sometimes looking as if merely misplaced.  (Examples:  Hole 2, 4, 8, 14.)
  * Texturing in certain maps greatly differs from the rest of the course.  These are Hole 3 (the "snow" map), Hole 17 (the "wood" map) and Hole 18 (the colourful one).  Regarding the snow map, I think the concept does not work at all.  I was convinced that there were simply textures missing, not that it was snow.
  * Some of the obstacles in Hole 9 appear "unnatural", or in other words, as if randomly thrown into the map "for the heck of it".

These tiny issues aside, I really did enjoy the course.  Good work!

The extra height was used for added protection against fallouts on the holes with it [and to maintain consistance with the 16-unit grid most of the other lumps I maintain (except curves) are part of]. Layout of barriers was also done in an attempt to keep T-Intersections at an absolute minimum.

Which holes (out of all of them) need improved? (I'm not that good at cameras.)

These were done primarily to vary the textures used. Are you sure they need improvement (or use default textures)?

I didn't do hole 9 from scratch. It can still be solved once you find a workaround to each of these barriers. Perhaps I should move this towards the end of the course.

In practice that extra height hardly ever makes a difference.  With a bit of effort it should be possible to combine both methods -- use regular barriers in most places and make it smoothly gain some extra height at the "dangerous" areas.  (There are examples of this technique in some of Mehdi's maps.)  I also think the texturing should be improved, possibly to match other courses.

Holes 2, 4, maybe 6, 8, 9, 10, maybe 12, 14, and 17.  Also take a look at some info_player_intermission guidelines from rlk.

Yes, I'm sure.  I think it is not a problem for the wood map to contain some wooden elements, but an all-wood map is extremely distinct from the rest of the course, which has nearly no wooden elements.  Same for the other two maps.  The colourful map could probably fit in a differently-themed course, but the snow map just looks plain bad.

That's not what I meant.  The difficulty is of no concern.  The problem is that some obstacles are redundant.  I don't think the small pyramid behind the first obstacle in the upper area will be touched in a regular game at all.

Where's the original map from?

Ignoring the extra height, a few holes already utilize this technique.

Improved (hopefully) the positions on all offending levels.

Variant textures are still used but in limited amounts. The snow map has snow only at the cup and contains a hidden hazard.

I rotated the small pyramid to make it more in the way.

Random generator. I did some changes to this randomly generated hole (including the mover).

Notice: There was an accident in excluding the fix for hole 15. A new version has been added to fix this issue plus the ones above.
