Topic: Vidski's Neverput course!!!!!! (Alpha release)

So heres the breakdown. I've just finished hole 15 and it's time for an alpha release. Any testers for these 15 holes while I finish the last 3 are highly appreciated. Post any errors bugs or suggestions on this thread and Ill check up on it to make fixes to the course and do updates. There not perfect and there are small things here and there I need to fix/change But for the most part they are pretty damn good to go. I have included an installation readme in the zip but you guys know what to do. thwomps/smile    Have a look!!!

Ohh yeah I forgot, You will notice everything is a par 7 because I havent decided what they should be. Any suggestions are welcome.

Re: Vidski's Neverput course!!!!!! (Alpha release)

Looks really incredible visdki! Your levels looks very difficult and fun to play. Should we gauge our suggestions for par numbers based on what we think would be a typical run, theoretically possible, theoretically possible plus one, or some other method? I'm just wondering if you have a "difficulty" rating in mind, and whether the par numbers should reflect that.

I will try and find time soon to try them out.

Re: Vidski's Neverput course!!!!!! (Alpha release)

kao123 I want to play Neverputt again !
This is what I feel when I see your shots vidski.
You have done a great work, at least for the artistic point of view.
I'm sure the gameplay will be great too.
I'll try them as soon as possible thwomps/smile

Re: Vidski's Neverput course!!!!!! (Alpha release)

Wow, these are great.

I just sent you an email with some t-intersections i spotted, and one or two textural items.

The only other comment I have (besides "f*&%king great!") is trhat on the 1st hole with the spiral ramp,
due to the distance of the vantage point and the size of the spiral, the moment when the ball hits the teleport, it is blocked from view.
This is only a little frustrating because you want to see everything that's happening,
I wonder if the exit ramp could just be longer so that the ball comes back into view before hitting the teleporter.
although I realize I am accustomed to neverball, where the view is closer and you can turn the camera at will and take a look around.

Another thought is what about putting teleporter textures at the arrival points, although I know this can be misleading, as they are not 2 way, but who would want to go backwards anyway?

just some thoughts...
Great course vidski, can't wait to play it again.

Re: Vidski's Neverput course!!!!!! (Alpha release)

Just completed the course.  I hope I'll get around to post some comments on the practical side of things (textures, geometry), but man, that was just really cool and a lot of fun.  Amazing work, vidski.

Re: Vidski's Neverput course!!!!!! (Alpha release)

On hole 11, there is some Z-Fighting on one of the platforms you land on when you start the hole (only one of the four is affected).

Re: Vidski's Neverput course!!!!!! (Alpha release)

Thanks all for the tips and great feedback. This is great cause you guys catching a lot little details I missed. Ive got a lot of finishing toutches to make it seems. and some structural fixes as well. Mainly hole 15. The 2 rectangular landing pads are way too easy to roll off of. Ill either put a back wall in or an arrow to point out that you need to aim and land the ball and the pocket martked with caution straight from the shot. (bounce it in).

dave wrote:

yeah this is along the lines of what I was thinking. I might just play them all over and over, take my best score, and add one or two. But you are exactly right, I do have to use the par ratings to reflect my intended difficulty level for the course because I am aiming for "hard to expert" and some of the holes can be easily completed in 3-5 strokes.

Good call, I found it. Its that little strip of turf at the foot of the landing pad. Thank you.

Tones, I got your email and screenshots. Highly appreciate the effort for detail. I will get those taken care of asap. Especially the one on hole 7. that one gets on my nerves because you can see it all the way around the ramp.  GRRRRR

About the sprial ramp issue on the first hole I totally agree. Do you think it would be better to extend the exit ramp to put the teleporter into view or make the ramp glass?  My only worry is that depending on how much longer I would have to make the exit way to put the teleporter into view, Going too far will prevent the ball from getting to the teleport because I dont think it has that much speed off the ramp.   I dunno, ill mess around with it and see what I can come up with.

Oooh, glass.  Good thinking. I'd say yeah, definitley preserve the playability, as you've obviously put lots of care into making these things work.

Re: Vidski's Neverput course!!!!!! (Alpha release)

Hey ent the ball down the big funnel in Hole 13 2 times, and it bounced out twice!..
Is this some kind of cruel joke?

I wonder if you'd consider making just the outside, or the underside (exterior) of the funnel the dark glass, that way you could have better visibility when the ball works it's way down to the narrow part.

Very fun stuff!

Re: Vidski's Neverput course!!!!!! (Alpha release)

Hey I cant find the t intersection you are talking about in hole 8 where you circled in your email.  I did find one in the outside corner of that same part but not where it joins the ramp down..

Yeah i know all about the ending spiral on hole 12 (crazy stars),  its was a similar problem i had with hole 2 but im gonna fix them both, as they are copies it will be 2 for 1.

As for the funnel hole,  13 i think.  I am , uummm,,  lol,  I dont know wtf I am going to do with this one yet, This funnel in putt is becomming a real pain in the A. The ball takes forever and a half to make it down the tunnel. I might just have to make the hole at the bottom bigger so the ball falls faster. Also putt glass walls on the outside or make the make the funnel bigger to prevent the ball bouncing out.

I fixed textures on 10 and 11, and ramps on 7, I extended the exit ramp in hole 1. Zfighting and T-ints on 11 should be fixed as well.

tnx a lot man, keep them comming!

Re: Vidski's Neverput course!!!!!! (Alpha release)

This course is pretty darn hard, ranging in difficulty from Hard to Extreme. It takes a lot of practice for me to go through these holes. Much harder than I expected.

Likewise, the course I'm making might not be as difficult as expected, but I will still make some pretty darn advanced curves. Expect some inner and outer banks to exist.

I am glad to hear that, but do not let your efforts with neverball drop because of putt. Building this course has taught me something. Overall, neverputt is inferior to neverball. (in almost every way) I mean face the facts man. Compare the ammount of develpment effort ball gets compared to putt.  Ball has customizable and on-the-fly view control. This alone gives ball far more capabilities than putt. Textures arent supported in putt, it can not handle stop and go situations. With neverball, you are in constant control of the ball, which also provides advantages. In neverputt, once you hit the ball, it goes where it goes and you cant stop it. Itts, you know.  I mean look at what the majority of people on this forum would rather play. Look at what game the majority of ppl on the forum actually put effort into.

I may be wrong, and if so I apologize, but from what I can tell paxed, you,  and myself are the only people who have done any level progression for putt recently. Where as there are at least a dozen people currently working on neverball levels. Putt is just like, unpopular compared to ball.  Thats all I gotta say.

This it what puts the last nail in the coffin.

This might come off as harsh...     People need to realize something: Neverputt is done.  It was done 7 days after I said "I think I'll write a golf game in 7 days."  All I've done since then is fix bugs and add levels.  If you want to add features, fork it.

I am not bitching, complining or anything of the sort. (cause I love putt and im glad he even gave it 7 days) Im simply saying. Mentality like this spreads like a virus. And because I am not willing to get code level on this project, I have no other choice but to 'fork it'

Ohh,  but just to clarify, my above post in no way implies that I am not 100% grateful to the people who have tried and tested paxed, csy, and my putt levels.   It's what keeps the fire burning!!!

Re: Vidski's Neverput course!!!!!! (Alpha release)

vidski...

I am hoping you will bring your course to completion, polish it a bit, as it's a real crown jewel for neverputt.

THEN, I'm hoping you'll feel like getting involved in designing some levels for neverball.   thwomps/wink

Re: Vidski's Neverput course!!!!!! (Alpha release)

What coffin?  As far as I can see, right now Putt is in a shape better than ever.

And please don't turn this into what it's not.  There's no conflict if the developer himself says "fork it".  Unless you somehow want to force him into developing it.

18

Re: Vidski's Neverput course!!!!!! (Alpha release)

ohh no no no. That's not the point!  thwomps/smile

I do not use 'fork it" to bash or incriminate on the developer himself in any way.

I am using the term as leverage, in hopes that putt will get code level attention. Sooner, rather than Later.       thwomps/grin

Re: Vidski's Neverput course!!!!!! (Alpha release)

Well, putt has gotten some attention since 1.4...

But, it would be nice to be able to have shiny textures. Replays would be nice, too... In case you pull off a really cool shot, it'd be great to show people. I think those things will come eventually, but ball is the priority for now, especially as we've got a bit of momentum heading towards the first release in about 2+ years...

Re: Vidski's Neverput course!!!!!! (Alpha release)

I had some improper wording in the post when I caught it today. It was expect, not except.

Otherwise, we have to get video recording software for this.

No more progress?...

Re: Vidski's Neverput course!!!!!! (Alpha release)

nope. im sorry. but i havvnt done shit.      I'll finish them some day but not today.

I do however wanna test your course.  I think the last svn i compiled was rev 722 or 802 or something like that which should avoid mapc lump restrictions beyond 1024-ish.
